Balancing coal’s contribution to energy security with the transition to cleaner energy

This year’s Coal and Energy Transition Day provided a comprehensive examination of the future of coal and South Africa’s evolving energy landscape, bringing together government, industry leaders, investors, logistics providers and independent power producers to explore the opportunities and challenges of a transitioning energy mix. Discussions addressed the impact of geopolitics on energy demand, the coal market and the energy transition, a comprehensive examination of the future of coal, both globally and locally, and the need for South Africa to transition to cleaner energy sources. We were in conversation with major coal producers, went in depth on the energy transition and the future energy mix and the concept of flexible coal as a complement to renewable energy. Additional topics covered how to overcome coal transport and logistics constraints, financing both coal and energy transition projects and the growing role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and market liberalisation in supporting a more diversified, secure and inclusive energy future.

Topics that were discussed include:

  • How current and recent geopolitical developments are changing energy market dynamics
  • How external factors are impacting coal producers’ current strategies
  • South Africa’s energy transition and the path beyond coal
  • Eskom’s perspective on coal and the energy transition
  • The business case for flexible coal
  • The progress being made in overcoming South Africa’s coal transport and logistics bottlenecks
  • Investors’ perspectives on funding coal and the energy transition
  • The role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and market liberalisation in South Africa’s energy transition
  • And much more…
